Brendle, Miriam Susanna Smoker
March 5, 1919 - February 15, 2021
With joyful and grateful hearts, we celebrate the life of Miriam Susanna Brendle,101, of Strasburg who went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, February 15, 2021, 3 weeks shy of her 102nd birthday. She passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by those who loved her so much. We feel very blessed that we had time with her during her final hours to say good-bye.
Family and friendships were at the center of Mim's life. In 1942, she married Martin "Marty" Brendle and moved onto the farm where she would spend the rest of her life. They shared many happy years together until his death in 1991. She was the loving mother of two, grandma of six, and great-grandma of five. Known as Mim, Grandma, BamMaw, Gram, Great Grammy, Grandma Brendle, and Aunt Mim, she had a big heart for many children and friends over the years.
Mim was a tireless worker and worked alongside Marty in the family poultry business, Brendle's Poultry, until their retirement in 1982. Mim loved cooking, baking, spending time fishing at the family cabin in Huntingdon County with the "mountain crew", going on cruises with friends and her dearest nephew and niece Doug and Jody Smoker, pinochle card group, her church at Wesley United Methodist Church of Strasburg, watching the Phillies, sewing, crochet, and sending birthday cards to everyone. She was fiercely independent and very happy to have lived at home from the time that Marty passed until the end of her life. She spent her life helping others and giving generously and selflessly, always seeing the good in everything and everyone.
Born in Parkesburg, Chester County on March 5, 1919, Mim was the daughter of Samuel B. Smoker and Salome Stoltzfus Smoker. Mim is survived by her son, Glenn, his wife Karen, and her daughter, Linda Arnold; grandchildren Holly (Arnold) Heyser, wife of Bill, David Arnold, Matthew Arnold, Anna Brendle Kennedy, wife of Steven, and Ian Brendle, husband of Melanie Martin; great-grandchildren Billy, Beau, and Bella Heyser, Miriam (Mia) Kennedy, and Goldie Brendle; her sister, Reba Hershey, and brothers, Daniel and Nevin Smoker.
Mim was preceded in death by her parents, husband Marty, grandson Andrew Arnold, and eight siblings: Norman Smoker, Marie Yoder, Lena Lapp, Lloyd "Jim" Smoker, Elsie Wingard, Lee Smoker, Amanda Beiler, and Marcus "Bud" Smoker.
A viewing will take place from 1-2 PM, followed by a celebration of Mim's life at 2 PM with Rev. David Ryan officiating, on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Wesley United Methodist Church. Following CDC guidelines masks will be required, and social distancing will be observed. Brenneman, Alfred G.
May 4, 1927 - July 22, 2021
Alfred G. Brenneman, 94, a resident of Harrisonburg, passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at Oak Lea Nursing Home.
Mr. Brenneman was born on May 4, 1927, in Newport News, and was a son of the late Alfred W. and Verda Hersberger Brenneman. He was retired from Henderson Construction in the Williamsburg area.
He was a member of Warwick River Mennonite Church. Upon moving to Harrisonburg, he and his wife attended Lindale Mennonite Church.
On July 18, 1950, he married Delma Zuercher Brenneman. They were married for 71 years.
Surviving is a daughter, Jeryl Thomas and husband, George, of Newport News; grandchildren, Michael Layman, Gerald Faulkner, Tammy Faulkner; great-grandchildren, Justin Layman and wife, Madison, Olivia Layman, and Courtney Arthur; great-grandchildren, Mason Arthur and Kayden Arthur, and special nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Brenneman was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Conley; grandson, Jeffrey Layman, and a sister, Anna Mae Pellman.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 26, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. at Lindale Mennonite Church with Pastor Robert Yutzy officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
Burial will be held privately.

Brenneman, Betty Jane
February 8, 1928 - April 10, 2021
Betty Jane Brenneman, 93, was born on Feb. 8, 1928, and passed from this life to her Heavenly home on Saturday, April 10, 2021.
She was a daughter of John and Pearl (Shank) Brenneman and spent her childhood in Denbigh (now Newport News), Va. Later, she lived in Harrisonburg more than 44 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, John Henry Brenneman; and a niece, Dorothy Brenneman.
She is survived by a sister, Bertha Fyffe of Isonville, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Mary Brenneman of Newport News, Va.; five nieces and nephews; 10 great-nieces and nephews and 10 great-great-nieces and nephews.
Betty accepted Christ and was baptized at Warwick River Mennonite Church at an early age. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Pike Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg. She was very diligent in being faithful to all the teachings in the Word of God in spite of many difficulties and trials throughout the years.
She was employed in various jobs throughout her adulthood, but especially enjoyed her years of work at Park View Press and Christian Light Publications from 1969 until her retirement in 2001.
Betty moved from Harrisonburg to the Mountain View Nursing Home in Aroda, Va., in 2014 and was there until her death. The family sincerely appreciates the excellent care--both physical and spiritual--she received there.
There will be a memorial service for Betty at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 2021, at the Pike Mennonite Church. She donated her body to medical science, so there will be no viewing or burial.

Brenneman, Joshua Paul
January 14, 1985 - March 9, 2021
Joshua Paul Brenneman, 36, of Harrisonburg, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2021, from injuries sustained in a work accident.
He was born in Allentown, Pa., on Jan. 14, 1985, and was a son of Dorothy Ann (Detweiler) Brenneman of Harrisonburg and the late Timothy Bergey Brenneman.
Joshua graduated from Eastern Mennonite High School, Class of 2004. He loved the outdoors and worked as a trail builder at Dirt Artisans. He also worked as a carpenter, refinished furniture and was a gifted painter. Joshua spent many weekends volunteering with Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition and Cincinnati Off Road Alliance trail building. Joshua loved everything nature and thrived outdoors. He loved hiking, mountain biking and camping and greatly appreciated the solitary beauty of mountain vistas. Family was important to him and he was a quiet and steadfast presence in family life. Joshua loved bicycling and almost always had his bike in the back of his van, ready to go for a ride whenever he had a chance.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, Ann Brenneman, are his sister, Mary Hope Brenneman and husband, Aboubacar Kaba, of Leesburg, Va., and his brother, Jacob Brenneman and wife Annalisa, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; his grandmothers, Grace Brenneman and Dorothy Detweiler; two nephews, Karfala Kaba and Timothy Kaba and two nieces, Margaret Brenneman and Irene Brenneman.
Preceding him in death are his grandfathers, Paul Brenneman and Paul Detweiler.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2021, at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church with Pastor Craig Mavin officiating.

Brubacher, Alice W. Auker
September 21, 1940 - November 16, 2021
Alice W. Brubacher, 81, of Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at The Gardens at Stevens. She was born in Farmersville to the late Noah and Leah (Wenger) Auker and was the wife of Harvey Brubacher with whom she shared 56 years of marriage.
Alice was a member of Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church. In her younger years, she was a school teacher and factory worker. She enjoyed sewing quilt tops, sending cards to friends, family and her church family. She loved spending time with her family and cherished memories created with them.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Vera Brubacher, Mary, wife of Dale Weaver, Gary Brubacher, John, husband of Rose Ann Brubacher; ten grandchildren, Megan, Melanie, Dervin, Denver, Dwight Weaver, Isaiah, Maleah, Kiara, Davian and Avalyn Brubacher; two sisters, Elsie Martin and Edna, wife of Ernest Martin.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Lydia, Fannie and Ruth; four brothers, Willis, Norman, Benjamin and Paul.
A viewing will be held on Friday, November 19, 2021, from 5 to 8 PM, at Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church, 140 Pleasant Valley Road, Ephrata. An additional viewing will be held on Saturday, at the church, from 12 to 1:45 PM, followed by her funeral service at 2 PM, with Bishop Larry Weaver officiating. Interment will take place in the adjoining church cemetery.

Brubacher, Mary E. Snyder Brown
January 10, 1929 - April 3, 2021
Mary E. Brubacher, 91, of Ephrata, passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2021, at the Gardens at Stevens.
She was born in Berks County to the late Clayton and Gertrude (Bivens) Snyder and was the wife of Mark Brubacher with whom she shared 56 years of marriage.
She was a member of Hinkletown Mennonite Church.
Mary was the owner of Browns Used Auto. She enjoyed painting and gardening. She especially loved cats.
In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by two daughters, Trudy Fryman, MaryEllen McCully; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two brothers, Carl Snyder, Clayton "Pete" Snyder.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Tom Brown, a grandson, Todd Haws; three sisters, Violet Snyder, Ruth Campbell, Helen Smith, and five brothers, Warren, Andrew, David, Paul and James Snyder.
A viewing will be held on Friday, April 9, 2021, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut Street, Denver. Services and interment will be private in Memory Gardens Memorial Cemetery.

Brubacker, Martha Z. Martin
January 7, 1977 - October 12, 2021
Martha Z. Brubacker, age 44 years of Loyal, WI, died peacefully at home Tuesday, October 12, 2021. She was born January 7, 1977 in Ephrata, PA, to Elam Ray & Lorraine (Zimmerman) Martin. Martha was diagnosed with liver cancer in March 2020.
She was united in marriage to Allen E. Brubacker on July 26, 1997 in Lititz, PA. Martha was a member of Scenic Grove Mennonite Church.
She is survived by her husband Allen, and they were blessed with six children; Joseph M. & Rosemary (Zeiset) and grandson Samuel, of Owen, WI, Stephen M., Marie E. Matthew M., Nathaniel M., and Benjamin M., all at home. She is also survived by her parents and three siblings, Joanne (Jay Lloyd Wise) of Stevens, PA, Daniel (Mary Musser) of Ephrata, PA, and James (Lori High) of Charles City, IA. She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.
Funeral services will begin at 9:30 A.M. at Scenic Grove Mennonite Church, W3046 Riplinger Rd., Loyal, WI 54446 on October 19, 2021. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Brubaker, Bertha W. Wenger
February 6, 1932 - August 1, 2021
Bertha W. Brubaker, 89, of Manheim, died peacefully on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at Pleasant View Communities. Born in Lititz, February 6, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Michael N. and Jennie Steffy Wenger. Bertha was the loving wife of Benjamin B. Brubaker and they observed their 55th wedding anniversary in May of this year. For over 20 years she and her husband operated "Echoes from the Past", a business in Manheim featuring antiques and unique historical building materials. She was also involved in retail sales for Bomberger's Store and Provident Book Stores. Bertha was a member of Millport Mennonite Church and in her early years taught Sunday school and was a youth advisor. Her interests included: flower and vegetable gardening, sewing, singing with her sisters, and playing the piano, and accordion. She had a deep passion for her extended family, and provided hospitality to friends. She and her husband Ben were generous to everyone they came in contact with; giving of themselves wherever they were needed. Bertha had a free spirit that could light up a room; she loved people with a sincere heart that helped them be positive in their daily walk through life.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Ben, is a brother, Paul W. husband of Elsie Wenger of Akron, three sisters: Kathryn Ebersole of Ephrata, Anna wife of Jack Huber of Lititz, Martha wife of Robert Harnish of Manheim, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are two brothers: Norman and Michael Wenger, and six sisters: Mabel Ristenbatt, Grace Ebersole, Laura Hoover, Mary W. Becker, Edna Cramer and Esther Wenger.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Bertha's memorial service at the Manheim Brethren In Christ Church, 54 North Penryn Road, Manheim, on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at 2:00 PM. Friends may visit with the family at the church on Saturday afternoon from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Brubaker, Grace Elaine Stahl
September 17, 1929 - October 20, 2021
Grace Elaine Stahl Brubaker, daughter of Ira and Nora Stahl, passed away on October 20, 2021, at age 92.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, J. Clarence "Red" Brubaker, son, Jerald (Jere) Brubaker, sister, Ellen Romaine Stahl (wife of Ray Sala) and brother Lorraine Stahl.
Grace was born in Davidsville, PA on September 17, 1929, where she graduated from high school. She attended Goshen College in Goshen, IN where she met her husband J. Clarence “Red” Brubaker. She studied nursing at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA where she received her L.P.N. She practiced nursing at St. Joe's Hospital in Lancaster, PA as well as Friendship Community and the doctor's offices of Dr. Busko and Dr. Harnish. She also worked at Manheim Auto Auction, Carper's, and Greendragon.
Grace was a charter member of Akron Mennonite Church. She was part of the choir, women's trio and often volunteered in various activities.
She sang with the Franconia-Lancaster Choral Singers for most of her life and later with Village Voices of Garden Spot Village. She had a wonderful love for music and singing which she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Quilting was a passion she learned from her mother and often volunteered at MRC in Ephrata.
Surviving are her children, Jay Brubaker (partner of Joyce Patton), Jim Brubaker (husband of Tina Brubaker), Susan Broaddus (wife of Kerry Broaddus), Jan Brubaker, and Barbara Erb (wife of Kevin Erb) and daughter-in-law, Janelle (Hess) Brubaker. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Caring Hospice Services and the staff at Garden Spot Village for their love and care of Grace.
A memorial service will be held in the future.

Brubaker, Howard Cleveland
May 22, 1935 ~ February 27, 2021
Howard Cleveland Brubaker of Olar, South Carolina died at his home Saturday, February 27, 2021 at the age of 85 after several years of declining health.
Howard was born on May 22, 1935 in Rockingham County, Virginia, the first child of the late Jacob and Reba (Showalter) Brubaker. On March 22, 1956 he married Miriam (Heatwole) Brubaker. Together they raised four children: Daryl, Myron, Phyllis, and Steven. Howard was a member of the Barnwell Mennonite Church.
Howard was preceded in death by his eldest son, Daryl. He is survived by his loving wife, Miriam, three children and their spouses, Myron (Jane Gochnauer) of Olar, Phyllis (Dale Mast) of Batesburg-Leesville, Steven (Cynthia Brenneman) of Guys Mills, Pennsylvania, and a daughter-in-law, Sharon (Brubaker) Yoder, of Wagener. He has 17 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
Howard is also survived by four sisters: Helen Kurtz, of Morgantown, PA, Doris Heatwole, of Bridgewater, VA, Sophie Martin, of Harrisonburg, VA, and Lois Lahman, of Lacombe, LA. Howard was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, James and Jacob Brubaker.
Howard and Miriam moved from Virginia to Bamberg County in 1973. He was a lifelong farmer and a longtime church leader (he was ordained to the ministry in 1969.) Howard, along with Miriam, served the church and community with faithfulness and warm friendship. Many will treasure their memories of Howard’s smile, welcoming handshake, or friendly punch on the shoulder. The words of one of his favorite hymns capture the focus of his life: “Let us pray for each other, not faint by the way, in this sad world of sorrow and care. For our home is so bright and it’s almost in sight, and I trust in my heart you’ll go there.”
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 3, at Barnwell Christian School, with burial in the Barnwell Mennonite Church cemetery.
Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, March 2, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Barnwell Mennonite Church.
The family will probably not be wearing masks, but they welcome anyone who wishes to wear masks to do so.

Brubaker, Laura G.
January 23, 1927 - December 11, 2021
Laura G. Brubaker, 94, a resident of Landis Homes Community and beloved “Auntie” to many nieces and nephews, achieved her long-expressed hope of “going home to be with Jesus” on December 11, 2021. She voiced this desire for many years, from a life lived based on her deep Christian faith.
Born in Hershey, PA, on January 23, 1927 to the late Allen F. Brubaker and Barbara Garber Brubaker, she contracted infantile polio at 9 months of age, which impacted her physical body but did not hinder her from living a productive adventurous and fulfilled life. From 27 months of age until maturity, she and her parents traveled back and forth to Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, Philadelphia for multiple corrective surgeries and rehabilitation, often leaving her there for 2 -4 months at a time. She was forever grateful to her parents for prioritizing her education to ensure graduation from Manheim Central High School and affording her piano lessons. An independent woman she learned to drive a car with hand controls and bought a house where she resided with her aging parents. She was accomplished on the accordion, piano and organ. Her hands knitted many sweaters, a beautiful dress and crocheted items for her family.
She perceived that “handicapped” persons needed to excel and prove their capabilities, and faithfully proved her industrious nature working from 1947- 1994 as an insurance policy reader and writer for Lititz Mutual Insurance. Walking with the help of braces and crutches did not hinder her from being a volunteer at Lancaster General Hospital on Saturday Mornings.
She enjoyed traveling with friends and family. A highlight was a trip to the Holy Land where she adventurously rode on camel, donkey and horseback to various destinations in order to “Be where Jesus had been”.
A woman of Christian Faith and member of Erbs Mennonite Church, she exemplified Christ’s spirit of love. Her smile warmed many. She kept “praising the Lord”, no matter the circumstances, including during the covid pandemic, when visits from family were restricted at her residence. Her heart was that of a humble servant.
Laura is survived by two sisters, Doris Horst and Arlene Martin both of Landis Homes Community. She was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Brubaker and his wife Mary and James Brubaker and wife Shirley; and sisters Ruth Weidman and husband Ray, Lois Boll and husband Titus, and brother-in-laws, Roy Horst and Lloyd Martin. Fourteen nieces and eight nephews were her “adopted” children, all whom she loved and cherished as her own. Today this entire family expresses deepest gratitude to all the caregivers who loved and cared for her too while at Landis Homes.

Brunk, Mabel Virginia
July 23, 1926 - September 7, 2021
Mabel Virginia Brunk, 95, of Goshen, passed away September 7, 2021. Mabel was the daughter of Joseph Eshelman Brunk and Alice Yoder Brunk, both deceased. She was predeceased by her siblings: Ivan Wilson Brunk, Florida; Milton Joseph Brunk, Goshen; Adella May Kanagy, Pennsylvania and Dorothy Belle Brunk, West Virginia. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was a resident of the Greencroft Community since 1992.
Mabel received her BSN in nursing from Goshen College and her MSN from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing where she graduated as valedictorian of her class. She was a nurse in Indianapolis before teaching nursing at Goshen College.
From 1959-1967 Mabel was a nurse at Pusan Children’s Charity Hospital, Pusan, Korea, under the auspices of the Mennonite Central Committee and CCF, caring for many ill and wounded abandoned and orphaned children after the Korean war. Mabel was surprised and touched when the Korean government flew her and other nurses from this era to Korea in 2012 for a 50th reunion in appreciation and recognition of their dedication and service.
During the Vietnam war, Mabel refused to pay taxes and cared for her mother near Harrisonburg, Virginia, until her mother’s death in 1977. She worked at Ten Thousand Villages in Akron, Pennsylvania, then moved to Tampa, Florida and later Charlottesville, Virginia, where she provided private care for many children in their homes.
Mabel joined the Christian Peacemaker Team and at 80, traveled to Iraq and Palestine to promote peace between Muslims and other groups. She acted as a Human Shield during the Iraqi war. She was an active member of Seniors for Peace in the Goshen area and logged thousands of hours in volunteer activities on the Greencroft Campus. She was an avid birder, was very pleased to win first prize at the Elkhart County 4H Fair for her elocution of a poem she recited and enjoyed performing in plays with the Curtain Raisers at Greencroft.
Friends will be received Friday, Sept. 10. from 10:30 until the 11:30 memorial service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Pastor Phil Waite will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Mabel may be made to the Joseph and Alice Yoder Brunk Scholarship Fund at Goshen College or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Buckwalter, Aaron David
November 18, 1930 - April 30, 2021
Aaron David Buckwalter, 90, of Lititz, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 30, 2021, with his wife of 69 years, Marian Burkhart Buckwalter, and his children by his side. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Landis B. and Ruth (Myer) Buckwalter.
David was a lifetime member of Mellinger Mennonite Church, where he served for many years as a Deacon. He spent his working years as a warehouse foreman for P.L. Rohrer and Brothers, Inc., now Rohrer Seeds. Upon retirement, he found fulfillment in serving people in need around the globe by volunteering with Mennonite Central Committee, Gain Warehouse, and sewing garments at home to be distributed to world refugees of war and hardship. He also loved mowing the large lawns at his church camp, Camp Hebron in Halifax, PA, and later, when he moved to Brethren Village, the lawns of the retirement community.
David was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Along with his wife, he is survived by five children: David R. Buckwalter (Gail Mongeau), Sheryl Eberly (Don), Sharon Seldomridge (Kim), Bill Buckwalter (Jackie Beyeler), and Mary Anne Kilgore (Steve). Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and a foster brother, Peter Alan Tschudy (Shirley).
Private remembrance services will be held at the convenience of the family. David's final resting place will be at Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery.
Buckwalter, Sara Rebecca Hostetter
February 1, 1925 - April 9, 2021
Sara Rebecca Buckwalter passed away as she had long prayed for, peacefully and in the company of family, on April 9, 2021 at Garden Spot Village. She was born on February 1, 1925 in Millwood, PA, the fourth of eight children of Galen B. (1895-1971) and Susie K. (1895-1985) Hostetter. She was preceded in death by her sisters; Eleanor, Virginia, Verna, Lydia, Elverta, and Emma, and is survived by her brother Hershey.
Sara married Richard Benjamin Buckwalter (1925 – 2019) on January 6, 1945 and was single-minded thereafter in building a life and family with him. She worked shoulder to shoulder with Richard as they developed the resources to buy and maintain a dairy farm in Cochranville. Her physical presence and energy provided a contrast in styles with her more studious partner. She was as comfortable working in the barn as in the house and perhaps most comfortable of all working the fields. But the kitchen was her sole domain, and her simple, delicious fare was quite literally endless for all fortunate enough to dine at her table.
Sara is the mother of four children, Eloise Glick (1946 - ), Lititz, PA, wife of Jesse Glick (1942 – 2018), Richard L. Buckwalter (1948 - ), New Holland, PA, husband of Deborah Shank Buckwalter (1949 - ), Victor L. Buckwalter (1952 - ), Keezletown, VA, husband of Christina Yoder Buckwalter (1951 - ), and J. Galen Buckwalter (1956 - ), Sierra Madre, CA, husband of Deborah Fremouw Buckwalter (1952 - ). She has 9 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. All benefitted from her distinct and uniquely physical nurturance; soothing troubled infants was instinctive for her, every bit as much as her hearty laugh and her surprising ability to turn a phrase with the English language.
When Sara and Richard retired from farming she turned her energy toward stitching quilts that Richard cross-stitched, leaving a treasured legacy for her family. Sara also leaves a life of prayer for all she knew. She was a lifelong member of the Mennonite Church and while a dutiful and diligent preacher's wife for much of her life, her personal faith was abiding.
The family would like to thank the staff at Garden Spot Village for their outstanding care and compassion during her final years. Most notably, during the year of separation caused by Covid, the comfort taken in knowing she was well-cared for was a true gift.
A private visitation will be held on Saturday, April 17th at Old Road Mennonite Church with interment following at the convenience of the family at Old Road Mennonite Cemetery. Womelsdorf - Alma H. Burkholder, 68, of Womelsdorf, passed away on Monday, October 11, 2021, at WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon. She was the wife of the late Barry L. Burkholder.
Born in Ephrata, PA on March 23, 1953, she was the daughter of the late John and Alma (Horst) Hurst. She was a member of the Little Mountain Mennonite Church.
She is survived by her children Sharon (Phil) Ehst of Delphi, IN, JoAnne (Mast) Stoltzfus of Millerstown, B. Lamar (Marilyn) Burkholder of Womelsdorf, Jason (Donna) Burkholder of Fredericksburg, Jonathan (Christa) Burkholder of Pleasant Mount, Justin (Velma) Burkholder of Myerstown and Rosina (Conrad) Sweigart of Saxton; brothers Harold Hurst of Danville, Daniel (Janie) Hurst of Myerstown, John (Bonnie) Hurst of Newmanstown, Paul (Gloria) Hurst of Myerstown, and Nelson (Cindy) Hurst of Pelham, GA; sisters Ruth (Moses Jr.) Yoder, of LaMonte, MO, Lois Owen of Turbotville, PA, Esther (James) Lapp of Lewisburg and Orpha (Ken) Zimmerman of Lebanon; thirty-seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; and special friend Mervin Weaver of Johnsonville, IL.
She was preceded in death by her sister Miriam Hurst.

Burkholder, Charles Henry
December 24, 1935 - February 18, 2021
Charles Henry Burkholder, 85, of Elizabethtown, formerly of Farmersville, passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2021, at Masonic Village. Charles was born December 24, 1935, in Leacock to the late David and Anna Ruth (Keller) Burkholder, and was married to the late Vera Herr Burkholder in 1956.
He is survived by daughter, Anita, wife of Vincent Celline of Mount Joy, and son, Stephen, husband of Brenda Burkholder of Ephrata.
Charles learned auto mechanics from his father who owned a garage in Leacock, and later opened his own auto body shop. During his retirement, he worked for the maintenance department at Fairmount Homes. He enjoyed the beach and camping with his family at Chincoteague, Virginia. He liked singing, tinkering and fixing things, and had a soft spot in his heart for his pet cat, Dimi. Charles had a strong faith which was nurtured in his early years at Stumptown Mennonite Church, and then at Groffdale Mennonite and Mt. Culmen Evangelical Congregational Churches.
Charles is also survived by five grandchildren, Matthew Burkholder (Renee Weaver), Christina Celline Smith (Alex), Michael Burkholder (Marcella Marucci), Rebecca Burkholder Jekel (Nathan), Andrew Burkholder; great-grandsons, John Burkholder Jekel and Herman Burkholder Jekel; sisters, Barbara Rissler and Mary McMichael (Elvin); and a brother, John Burkholder (Dawn).
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by siblings, Alma Carper, Elvin, Ira, David, and Arthur.
A remembrance service will be held at the family's convenience. The family is grateful to the staff at Masonic Village for the excellent and loving care they provided to Charles during COVID-19 and after he was diagnosed with cancer. Special thanks to all of the dining staff in the Grand Lodge, especially Lisa and Tracy for always going above and beyond in looking after Charlie.

Edna M. Burkholder, 92, of Ephrata, died Friday, March 26, 2021 at Ephrata Manor.
Born in Ephrata, she was the daughter of the late Henry B. and Lizzie (Martin) Hoover.
Edna was last employed by Yoder's Market as a deli clerk.
She was a member of Hinkletown Mennonite Church. A former volunteer at Ephrata Community Hospital, she also enjoyed crocheting items to share with others, reading and traveling.
Surviving are four children: Kenneth married to Carol (Gibbel) Burkholder, Ephrata, Thelma married to Tom Overholt, Fairview, NC, Barbara A. married to Jerold Martin, Lititz, Shirley married to Howard Megill, Rolla, MO, 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and a brother Henry married to Mabel Hoover, Ephrata.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Anita H. Burkholder and Joan Marie Burkholder, five siblings and two foster siblings.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Hinkletown Mennonite Church, 2031 Division Hwy., Ephrata. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Burial will be private in the adjoining church cemetery. Elsie N. Burkholder, 80, of Leola, passed away on Monday, November 15, 2021, at home.
She was born in Upper Leacock Township to the late Samuel R. and Anna Mary S. (Nolt) Burkholder.
She was a member of Groffdale Mennonite Church (Groffdale Conference).
Elsie was a quilt maker.
Elsie is survived by four siblings, Paul N., husband of the late Frances R. Burkholder of Leola, Elmer N., husband of Mary H. Burkholder of Leola, Esther N. Burkholder, with whom she resided, Sarah N., wife of the late John Z. Brubacher of Leola; a brother -in-law, J. Jacob Zimmerman of Greenwood, WI; two sisters-in-law, Emma Z. Burkholder of Ionia, IA, Anetta M. Burkholder of East Earl and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her a parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Ivan N., Leroy N., and Willis N. Burkholder; three sisters, Martha N. Burkholder, Anna Mary N. Burkholder, and Katie N. Zimmerman and a stillborn brother.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, November 18, 2021, from 2 to 6 PM at the late residence, 183 Forest Hill Road, Leola. Harry M. Burkholder, 90, of 576 Blue Rock Road, New Holland, died at his home on May 7, 2021 after a brief illness.
Born in Earl Township, he was the son of the late Henry R. Burkholder and Annie (Martin) Burkholder.
Harry was a retired farmer and a member of the Martindale Mennonite Church (Groffdale Conference).

Burkholder, J. Clyde
May 29, 1930 - May 13, 2021
J. Clyde Burkholder, 90, of Mountville, joined his Lord and was reunited in heaven with his wife and son on Thursday afternoon, May 13, 2021 at Lancaster General Hospital after a very brief illness. Born in Clay Twp., he was the son of the late John H. and Mary Wenger Burkholder. He was the husband of Anna Ruth Becker Burkholder for 59 years prior to her passing in 2012.
Clyde possessed an engaging personality with whoever he met. A visit to his home inevitability resulted in a guided tour of his garage where his many hit and miss engines or other antiques or curiosities could be found. His interest in Cushman scooters lead him to travel extensively and collect and restore his own. Understandably, he was a dedicated member of the Rough and Tumble Association in Kinzer and the Cushman Club of America. He was also a longtime member of Twin Pine Hunting Club in Clinton County.
Clyde was a faithful member of Mountville Church of the Brethren where he assisted with maintenance around the church and volunteered with disaster relief projects. Clyde embodied the New Testament Fruits of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
His entire career was spent working for the former New Holland Machine Company (now CNH). Throughout his employment, he was a welder, worked in maintenance and in assembly. Following retirement, he and Anna Ruth made door mats from used automobile tires. He was also a true "American Picker." He was repurposing and picking long before it was trendy. He was always looking to improve in whatever he was involved.
Surviving is a son, Larry E. Burkholder of Mountville; three grandchildren, Kirsten (Justin) Deese, of Gulf Breeze, FL, Steve (LuAnn) Harris of Strasburg, and Sheila (William) Rittenhouse of Columbia; six great grandchildren; and five siblings, Paul Burkholder and Jean Zimmerman Alvisi, both of Ephrata, and Ruth Breneman, Ezra Burkholder, Glenn (Phoebe) Burkholder, all of Washington Boro; and a sister-in-law, Lois Burkholder of Washington Boro. In addition to his parents, wife, and son, Steven L. Burkholder, he was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Burkholder.
A funeral service will be held on Monday morning, May 17, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Central Manor Church of God, 387 Penn Street, Washington Boro, PA. Interment will follow in the Mountville Brethren Cemetery. Kimbria Skye Burkholder, age 2 ½ years, passed away peacefully in her mother’s arms at 9:18 p.m. on January 16, 2021, at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.
The precious daughter of Jeffrey and Leann Burkholder, she was born on July 5, 2018 at Kirksville, Missouri. At the age of four months, she was diagnosed with I-cell disease, a rare hereditary genetic disorder.

LeRoy N. Burkholder, 89, of 208 Reading Road, East Earl, died peacefully at home on Monday, January 25, 2021. He was married 31 years to Annetta M. Nolt Weaver Burkholder. His first wife, Verna Martin Burkholder died in 1987. Born in Upper Leacock Twp., he was the son of the late Samuel R. and Anna Mary Nolt Burkholder.
LeRoy had been a farmer and had also worked for Horst Construction for over 20 years. He was a member of the Weaverland Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference.
Surviving besides his wife is a daughter, Elva Jane wife of Lawrence Hoover of OH; three sons, Charles Ray husband of Mabel Burkholder of NY, Jonas Ralph husband of Arlene Burkholder of NY and James Edward husband of Diane Burkholder of Reinholds; six step sons, Mark L husband of the late Arlene Weaver of OH, Kenneth R. husband of Judy Weaver of IA, Andrew P. husband of Mary Etta Weaver of WI, J. Leroy R. Burkholder, 84, of Ephrata, passed away Friday, September 10, 2021, at Lincoln Christian Home.
Born in Ephrata, he was the son of the late Clayton and Lena (Rutt) Burkholder and was the husband of the late Gladys Irene (Gingrich) Burkholder who passed away in 2013.
Leroy was a member of Centerville Mennonite Church.
He is survived by four sons, Glen G., husband of Deborah (Mellinger) Burkholder of Wolcott, VT, Clair G., husband of Shirley L. (Nolt) Burkholder of Quarryville, Bernell G., husband of Diane L. March 30, 1930 - October 25, 2021
Naomi Caroline Byers, age 91, passed away peacefully in the arms of Jesus on October 25, 2021. She was born on March 30, 1930 in Christiana, PA to the late Elam and Elizabeth Mast Smoker.
Naomi loved Jesus more than anything else. She would share about him boldly every chance she got, no matter who she was speaking with, including her family. She prayed for each family member by name, challenging them to live for Jesus. She was inspiring, encouraging, and always giving of herself. She had fortitude and a deep inner strength that was rooted in the Lord, seeing her through many mountains and valleys during her lifetime.
Naomi enjoyed gathering the family together, connecting with friends and her Strasburg Mennonite Church family. She enjoyed cooking, canning and traveling on motorcycle trips with her husband and friends.
Her life was a living example of Galatians 2:20, her favorite verse.
Naomi is survived by her four daughters and their husbands; Beverly (Michael) Landis, Carol (Daniel) Davis, Audrey (Jeffery) See, Debra (Ricky) Brubaker; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters; Erma (Dave) Clemens, Louise (Paul) Miller, Jeanette (Kenneth) Eby; and sister-in-law, Ann Smoker.
Naomi was preceded in death by her daughter Jodi, and her husband Harold to whom she was married for sixty four years, and for whom she cared for the last sixteen years of his life; and a brother, Elvin Smoker.

Ruby June (Schmucker) Byler, age 85, of Nappanee, died peacefully at home with her family present at 3:05 pm, Friday, August 13, 2021. She had been diagnosed with COVID in December 2020, which accelerated heart disease and she had significantly declined in the last 2 weeks.
Ruby was born June 5, 1936 in Bremen to Eli and Mary (Yoder) Schmucker. On May 6, 1972, she married Lester A. Byler at Maple Lawn Church in Nappanee. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Byler most loved being a mother. She also had worked as a nursing assistant, cleaning lady, and amish taxi driver.
Mrs. Byler is survived by her children, Philip (Cathy) Byler, Sarasota, FL, Larry (Violet) Byler, Hutchinson, KS, Rhoda (Adam) Rees, Brainerd, MN; from Lester’s first marriage, Ruth (Nathaniel) Yoder, Lesvos, Greece, Naomi Byler, Nappanee; 16 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 4 brothers and 1 sister, Mahlon (Martha) Schmucker, Vernon (Katie) Schmucker, Ivan (Sadie) Schmucker, Owen (Norma) Schmucker, Erma Schmucker. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Lester; parents; brother, Earl and sister, Elizabeth.

Ruth S. Byler, 90, of Lititz, passed away peacefully into God's loving arms on February 21, 2021. Ruth was born on February 5, 1931 to Christ and Esther Lapp in Lampeter, PA. She was preceded in death almost three years ago by her husband, J. Robert. Bob and Ruth called Brethren Village home for the last almost 10 years.
Ruth is survived by her three children – Carol (Beanie) Denlinger of Ephrata; Don (Cathy) Byler of Landisville; and Ron (Mim Shirk) Byler of Goshen, IN.; seven grandchildren – Jesse Shirk Byler, Ryan (Seely) Byler, Kristi (Danny) Steech, Brianna Byler, Lindsey (Dustin) Strauss, Lauren (Mark) Lefever and Lia Denlinger; and eight great-grandchildren – Adley and Bryce Byler, Ellyson and Brock Steech, Chase and Brooke Strauss and Olivia and Layla Lefever.
Ruth was preceded in death by a grandson, Jared Denlinger, and her five Lapp brothers – John, Christ, Richard, Bob and Jerry.
Ruth worked as a waitress at Plain & Fancy Farm and Dining Room for more than 25 years. She was a member of Neffsville Mennonite Church where she and her husband were actively involved with their friends and church community. Ruth's children remember their mother as someone who was always in the background caring for others. Ruth was committed to her family and loved to visit and participate in family events.
A family visitation and graveside service are planned on February 26 and 27. Ruth's children are grateful for family and friends who have remembered Ruth in their thoughts and prayers during these last three years since her husband and our father died, especially during these COVID months when we and others have not been able to visit her regularly. Thank you for your words of encouragement and compassion.
